Marriott Marquis Houston

Marriott Marquis Houston

There’s a saying that “everything’s bigger in Texas”, and the Marriott Marquis is no exception. Boasting over a thousand rooms and standing thirty storeys tall, when the Marquis opened in December 2016 it increased downtown Houston’s hotel room capacity by twenty percent. The hotel is located beside the George R. Brown Convention Center and Discovery Green park. Just like everything else in the Marquis, the event spaces are extensive with over 150,000 square feet of space to host corporate and social events.

According to the interior designers at Looney & Associates, the design concept was to design a large-scale hotel with detail, ambiance and character with using the local region as inspiration. Throughout the hotel the Texas theme is prominent – from the 530 foot Texas-shaped lazy river on the roof to the various art pieces on the walls. Doug Childers, principal at Morris Architects adds, “this project is not just about building a hotel. The key to attracting more national and statewide conventions to Houston is to surround the convention center with an active district that has a distinctive Houston character."

Each of the six cabs was adorned with a different space photo, some of which included an astronaut floating weightlessly in space as well as a stunning view of earth from the International Space Station.

The elevator cabs give tribute to the well-known fact that Houston is recognized as the world capital of space exploration with NASA space center. Each of the six cabs was adorned with a different space photo, some of which included an astronaut floating weightlessly in space as well as a stunning view of earth from the International Space Station. The three glass panels in each elevator were created using a technographic interlayer application that transformed the images into a durable, photographic tribute to space exploration. These images leave an out-of-this-world impression that is both breathtaking and thought-provoking.

Once a parking lot, this space has been transformed into a distinguished Houston skyscraper. The Marriott Marquis does a wonderful job of celebrating the unique characteristics of Texas and bringing a sense of community to the conference center.
