Buro Lubbers Landscape architecture & Urbanism as Landscape designer

At the foot of one of Eindhoven’s most important industrial icons, the Philips Light Tower, Buro Lubbers designed a new square. A pergola overgrown by wisteria and roses offer passersby a transparent glimpse of the tranquil, green atmosphere. Here one can, after shopping or a long day at the office, quietly enjoy a drink on a terrace or sit down on a bench among lush plants to escape the hustle and bustle of downtown Eindhoven.

The amorphous form of the planning area demanded a strict structure, that brings serenity and also guarantees an optimal view of the Light Tower monument. Therefore the design concept is based on rigid lines that run counter to the building. A feel of human scale is the result. The unity of the design is kept by using consistent shapes and materials: a dark gray concrete slab, robust Corten steel planters, warm looking wooden benches. The most striking role is played by the vegetation: ever green, seasonal flowers and colourful accents of Rhododendrons.
