The built environment of the campus provides the necessary spatial conditions for the MOME university’s new operating model, which is unique in Hungary. Its strategic goal is to supplement state funding with complementary market strategies. The university’s centre for innovation – called “UP” – plays a crucial role in this arrangement.

The architectural design of the campus provides distinctive spatial solutions in each of the university’s three key buildings: the suspended structure of “BASE” maximizes the freedom to use different floors, and the horizontal and vertical transparency of building “A” encourages interdisciplinary dialogue. Meanwhile, the exterior of “UP” represents a new visual image for the university, and the interior provides a constant – and constantly changing – revelation.

When designing the extension of the MOME Campus we analysed the question of identity. The issues concerned how to connect with László Moholy-Nagy, whose name the university bears, and whose creative work focused on innovation.

Situated in a slightly sloping park-like landscape, the MOME campus houses teaching and research facilities, but also creates an inspiring learning environment. Our design reaches back to the original concept by Z. Farkasdy and aligns three buildings on an axis. The volume of the “BASE” building for undergraduates has an extraordinary suspended structure. The old central building “A” (1954) accommodates MA courses and administration. Its interior was transformed to a large extent, but its exterior was mostly not changed. The third building, which is nearest to the city and in a prominent place, is the university’s centre for innovation, named “UP”. A topographical part called “GROUND” was also created in the centre of these buildings to transmute the separate elements. The underground spaces of “GROUND” were designed as a pulsating centre of interaction, which can function as the largest indoor and outdoor communal space of the campus.

MOME UP is the University’s most iconic building at MOME (Moholy-Nagy University of Art and Design). Architecturally and spiritually, it embodies the innovative energy and progressiveness that permeates the Campus. It is home to the Innovation Center – a key research, development, and innovation site –, the Doctoral School, the EU Projects office, the Budapest Design Material Library, the Brand Office, as well as MOME Open, the University’s adult training platform.

The architecturally extraordinary 6,000 m² building was inspired by Moholy-Nagy's light experiments. Light, transparency and spatial depth play a central role in the design. A double hole system in the atrium provides changing perspectives, while large glass surfaces with slats regulate natural light and ventilation. The façade's striking glass design significantly shapes the character of the building. Large glazed areas are overlaid with an outer layer of LINIT©EcoGlass profiled glass, which serves as both sun protection and supports natural ventilation. The system stimulates warm air circulation while ensuring soft, filtered light inside.

The play of light on the textured glass surface gives the building an almost immaterial appearance – it does not seem completely tangible, but rather appears to float in the field of vision. On the outside, the semi-transparent shell creates tension and depth, while clear lines of sight are created on the inside. The architectural design is inspired by Moholy Nagy's experiments with light, transparency and blurring, turning the building itself into a visual experience.

Brand description

LAMBERTS glass factory is  the largest cast glass factory in Europe and has one of the most modern plant and machine parks anywhere. LAMBERTS is the only glass factory in Europe to manufacture U profile glass in all stages of production. U-profiled glass, also called U-glass or channel glass, is used for elaborate, design-driven architectural projects all over the world due to its quality, refinement possibilities, clear forms and technical variety. Furthermore, we are the only cast glass company in the world to manufacture all types of existing cast glass: LINIT®EcoGlass (U-Glass), a special and "U"-shaped rolled glass, ornament glass (also available as a special patterned glass for facades), antimony-free solar glass LAMBERTS EcoSolar (optimized cast glass generating solar power), wired glass and wired ornament glass. LAMBERTS Eco-Ornament Glasses are frequently used in facades as an alternative to neutral float glass or in combination with float glass due to their impressive play of light.
