Mountain Refuge

A light gesture resting on the mountain. Amid the green folds of Morro da Turquia in Pomerode, this house emerges from an intimate dialogue between architecture and landscape. It does not impose itself; instead, it reveals the forest, enters it carefully, observes, listens, and only then finds its place.

The project is guided by a simple yet powerful principle: intervene as little as possible to reveal as much as possible. More than 95% of the original vegetation was preserved; only what was essential was touched, allowing the house to settle into the topography without harming it. The precise and discreet steel structure rests on cast-in-place concrete pillars, enabling the building to follow the natural contours of the land.

The house unfolds in three gestures: on one side, the parents’ bedroom; on the other, the children’s bedroom; and at the center, a generous social void—a completely open living space facing a 180-degree horizon that captures both sunrise and sunset. Although separated by the central social space, both bedrooms experience the full cycle of the sun.

The positioning of the house creates breathing spaces and voids that lift it away from the terrain, allowing the wind to flow through, the light to draw across its surfaces, and the landscape to enter freely. The impression is of a house that does not occupy the mountain, but exists in harmony with it.

Along the eaves, straw textures filter the sunlight, casting changing patterns across the floor throughout the day and tracing the path of the sun. The swimming pool extends toward the horizon, receiving sunlight from morning until late afternoon. A deck runs along the entire social area, strengthening the connection between indoors and outdoors while embracing uninterrupted views of the surrounding mountains.

Light, open, and airy, the house is a clear expression of VOO’s philosophy: architecture that dissolves into the landscape, respects the land, seeks the essential, and transforms the act of living into a daily exercise in contemplation.
