This coastal Rhode Island home is composed of a series of five structures connected by a continuous raised deck. The clean lines of these gabled forms, which are clad in weathered ipe wood, evoke classic New England barns and boat sheds while striking a modern tone.
The waterside elevation is oriented to capture sweeping views toward Easton Bay and Sachuest Point National Wildlife Refuge through full-height glazed window walls. Aluminum louvres, motorized shades, and deep overhangs on the eastern and western façades reduce solar gain and provide privacy.
The public space with open kitchen, living, and dining areas opens to the raised deck, which is the principal outdoor living space. The decks resting between the gables and the slender lap pool on the leeward side of the home are designed to be protected from strong winds.
The master and guest bedroom suites each occupy separate structures to create greater privacy. Sustainable design and construction elements include a rainwater collection and recycling system, a permeable driveway made of crushed shells, and landscaping with native grasses.
