Context
The single-family, one-storey house is located in Raykovo, Smolyan. It belongs to a young family with two small children, whose wish was to have a house in the neighborhood they grew up in and to live in a contemporary, one-storey home. The designated property for the construction of the house is in close proximity to the existing hotel Kiparis and other dwellings. Our goal was to adequately fit the new building in this part of the city and on the lot, dominated by the style and volume of the existing architecture, as well as meeting the client’s requirements for a modern building and living area of about 200 sq.m.
Solution
Several massive stone walls, built with local material, recycled from old Rhodope houses, divide the living spaces – living room with kitchen, children’s bedrooms and master bedroom. The walls fit the building in the context of the Rhodope architecture with the typical stone walls of Raykovo, and the spaces between them are fully glazed to the south – characterized by its direct connection to the landscaped yard, accessible from any room. The roof is landscaped and single-sloped, and the house is partially attached to the existing Hotel Kiparis, also owned by the investor. The new building successfully fits into this context, without disturbing the environment in both style or volume, but on the contrary – it is a delicate contemporary intervention.
