Located in a listed historic building in Old Tbilisi, this project adapts a compact apartment for contemporary living while incorporating references to the city’s architectural heritage.
The main design challenge was to use the limited floor area efficiently while retaining a sense of openness. A mezzanine takes advantage of the generous ceiling height, organising the interior across two levels and accommodating additional functions within the existing volume.
The mezzanine balustrade references the traditional balconies of Old Tbilisi. By bringing an element associated with the city’s façades and courtyards into the apartment, the design establishes a direct relationship between the interior and its architectural context.
Green frames articulate the spatial openings, while a restrained material and colour palette maintains continuity throughout the apartment. The project combines efficient spatial planning with a locally informed design approach, giving the compact home a distinct identity.
