Set within a residential landscape in Olivebridge, New York, the Olive Poolhouse is conceived as a secondary structure that supports outdoor living while responding to the climatic constraints of the region. Rather than functioning as an isolated amenity, the poolhouse is integrated into a broader site strategy that connects the existing home, outdoor patios, and pool into a continuous spatial sequence. Its sustainability lies in this careful coordination of movement, exposure, and enclosure, allowing the building to remain useful across seasons without excessive reliance on mechanical systems.
Site integration and minimal intervention
The project is organised around the pool as a spatial connector rather than a standalone feature. Positioned between two outdoor patios, one associated with the main house and the other leading to the poolhouse, the pool operates as a transitional element that links different zones of activity. This reduces the need for additional built circulation while strengthening the coherence of the site. The poolhouse itself is designed as a lightweight intervention, limiting ground disturbance and maintaining the openness of the landscape. By working within an already developed residential plot, the project avoids the environmental costs associated with new land use while enhancing the usability of existing outdoor space.
Seasonal adaptability and environmental control
A key aspect of the design is its ability to adapt to changing weather conditions. The screened-in porch incorporates motorised roll-up screens that can be retracted when conditions allow, enabling a direct connection between the poolhouse and the surrounding outdoor environment. When deployed, the screens provide protection from insects and moderate exposure to wind and debris without fully enclosing the space.
This semi-enclosed condition is complemented by large sliding glass doors on both sides of the structure. These openings allow the interior to be opened fully during warmer months, promoting natural ventilation and reducing the need for mechanical cooling. During cooler periods, the enclosure can be partially secured, extending the usability of the space beyond peak summer conditions.
Indoor-outdoor continuity and spatial efficiency
The architectural strategy prioritises continuity between interior and exterior spaces. The poolhouse is not conceived as a fully conditioned building but as a transitional environment that mediates between open air and enclosed space. This reduces the demand for energy-intensive systems while maintaining comfort through airflow, shading, and flexible enclosure.
The plan supports informal gathering, dining, and relaxation, allowing the structure to accommodate a range of uses without requiring additional built area. By concentrating program within a compact footprint, the project limits material use while maximising functional value.
