On the edge of Prospect Park, a 1901 Victorian Brooklyn brownstone is refitted with new furnishings by Studio Nato for a young family of four who are embracing domestic living as they transition into working from home. Having previously undergone a renovation, a sense of renewal is once again imbued as the historic home is contemporized to celebrate a sophisticated comfort. Softness in form and colour permeate the spaces, inviting its users to play, work, rest and commune.

Existing features of the brownstone are respected; the traditional layout, doors, and ornate moulding are retained and juxtaposed by additions such as customized millwork and new window shutters that are contextually appropriate. An air of calm fills the four-bedroom home where a predominantly light palette is balanced by darker walnut floors.

A mix of classic and contemporary pieces convey an honest materiality; the layering of different eras are alluded to in mid-century-inspired seating, contemporary light fixtures, and modern cabinetry for storage. Simple lines and natural tones emphasize an uncomplicated elegance while warm, colorful artworks by American female artists such as Susan English, Cara Tomlinson, Sydney Licht and Ky Anderson enliven the spaces throughout.

While the clients are inclined towards a more traditionalist style, the couple and their two young children also required contemporary amenities and furnishings to facilitate their day-to-day activities whether in the office, playroom or sewing room. The result is a bright and charming interior space that makes spending time at home in Park Slope all the more enjoyable.
