Renovation of a historic home to the Pharmacists’ Association Headquarters

In 1998, the Coimbra Regional Headquarters of the Pharmacists’ Association bought two semi-detached houses. In 2010 the Pharmacists’ Association decided to occupy both buildings, to which end it had to requalify number 12B, lying vacant and presenting signs of decay.

The rehabilitation project focused on adapting the building to the new functional programme, establishing interior communications with the adjacent building. The principle that characterized the intervention was based on the interior remodeling of the building by adding value or replacing its original configuration and materials. Here and there, where the implementation of the new programme did not adapt to the existing structure, certain spatial alterations were made to adjust the building to its new condition. Some of the existing walls were demolished on the ground floor to install a spacious living room which gives access to the gardened courtyard at the rear of the building. On the middle floor, the atrium of the main entrance distributes the space of the various classrooms, whilst the top floor houses offices. The three floors communicate through a vertical circulation feature also accommodating three wooden containers (one per floor) that house storage and toilets, and on the lower and upper floors, doors to the adjacent building.

With the exception of the service areas, all walls and elements (such as skirting boards, frames, doors and shutters) were painted white. The original wooden floorboards were also recovered throughout. As a result, the uniform finishing has given back a feeling of clarity to the space, complemented by the careful but also uniform selection of furniture and lighting.
