The city center of Heerlen is undergoing a major transformation and we were are to contribute by designing the Urban Development plan for the Promenade Park area, opposite the city's theater. Vacant offices and retail spaces are making way for a widened and greened Promenade, the main shopping street. This will restore the original sightline between the market square and Schouwburgplein.

A green courtyard is being created between the Promenade and Schinkelstraat, bringing residential living back to the heart of the city. Our design also includes a residential building with a food hall on the ground floor at Schouwburgplein. This building forms the link between Schouwburgplein, the Promenade, and the residential courtyard. By articulating the volume, we created a prominent corner with circular terraces overlooking the square.

The vertical window slots enhance the abstraction of the upper volume and are finished in a specially developed glazed brick, in collaboration with St. Joris. The chosen colors and materials complement the existing buildings. The plastered apartments atop the building, designed as penthouses, reference and overlook the villa atop the Glaspaleis (Glass Palace) by architect Frits Peutz. It has been a privilege to be able to build on this site and thus contribute to Heerlen's new urban development.
