PT Residence

Perched quietly atop a hill in New York’s Hudson Valley, the PT Residence engages the vastness of its landscape with deliberate restraint. Conceived as a prototype dwelling for a 69-acre site, the house reflects the clients’ sensibilities merging contemplative observation with global perspective.

Inspired by the reductive clarity of Carl Andre’s minimalist art, the architecture is distilled into a singular monolithic volume. A two-story black box rests lightly within the terrain, organizing private life below and communal life above. Industrial Galvalume panels, more commonly associated with factories and warehouses, cloak the building in a machine-like skin—at once pragmatic and poetic—stripped of ornament and expressive of material honesty. The careful coordination of building height and panel dimensions eliminates horizontal joints, allowing the façade to read as a continuous, seamless surface. Windows are pulled flush to the exterior plane, dissolving depth and reinforcing the perception of a singular carved mass.

A thin metal canopy floats at the entry, a delicate gesture that punctuates the building’s austere composition, marking arrival through lightness rather than monumentality.

Ascending into the upper level, space unfolds as an open, loft-like gallery. Living, dining, and kitchen zones flow seamlessly, framed by ribbon windows that dissolve corners and stretch the horizon inward. Triple-glazed glazing captures shifting light, seasonal color, and expansive valley views, turning the interior into an ever-changing lens onto the surrounding landscape. The composition of large square openings to the north and west introduces moments of pause—precise frames for curated photography, cabinetry, and art.

Materiality is restrained yet tactile: brushed gray oak floors, soft white walls, and trimless lighting form a quiet backdrop for mid-century furnishings and scattered artworks. A floating corner wood-burning stove anchors the living space, offering warmth and ritual within the otherwise minimal environment. The kitchen, composed in muted silvers, warm stone, and textured tile, balances sculptural presence with domestic calm.

A monastic wooden stair descends through light and shadow, guided by the presence of a primitive mask sculpture, into a lower-level photo gallery corridor.  Two identical bedroom suites are set beneath the kitchen volume, their arrangement both pragmatic and deliberate, consolidating services while fostering spatial clarity. Elongated windows invite soft woodland light and framed forest views, composing intimate dialogues between art, furniture, and nature.

The PT Residence is a quiet vessel for light, landscape, and art, transforming simplicity into spatial depth and experiential richness.
