The building is located in Caprino Bergamasco, a small medieval village located near Bergamo. The house, a typical Bergamo farmhouse, is made up of an original nucleus dating back to the 1700s. The building has maintained the constructive characteristics of the local tradition over time and is made up of several annexed buildings: a central part in stone masonry, a L-shaped plastered masonry which presents in the south facade suggestive wooden balconies characteristic of the farmhouses in the area and a recently built barn in exposed brick.

The aim of the project is to find a meeting point between the ancient and purely agricultural history of the building and the actuality of the project. All the typical characteristics of rural architecture have been preserved and integrated into the new project; therefore, traditional materials such as stone and wood have been paired with steel and concrete.

An analysis of the building reveals the construction expertise typical of Lombard farmhouses, usually oriented along an east-west axis, featuring large openings and wooden balconies on the south front, and a massive north front with almost no openings. This arrangement allowed for direct solar heat and light to enter while minimizing heat loss.

Following these guidelines, the project took shape by closing the large openings of the south-west façade with infill panels made of wood, metal, and glass, which allow sunlight to pass through and contribute to heating during the winter months. In summer, when the sun is higher compared to winter, its rays are filtered by wooden beams, arranged at varying densities, recalling the historic wooden balcony structures, while functioning both as sunshades and parapets. A second measure to filter the summer sun is the setback of the infill on the largest opening, which creates a small loggia accessible from the kitchen and enhances the shading effect of the roof.

The design approach was guided by a respect for the fundamental aspects of tradition, fostering a dialogue between architectural language and contemporary comfort, while keeping energy efficiency as a primary concern.
