For a location of 4 declined monuments in the town of Arnhem, NEXIT invented an approach in the name of ‘Conservation through development’. The expensive restoration and renovation of the properties Rijnstraat 56 to 59 was compensated with a complementary new concept. The optical detached building where 4 apartments are hosted, is executed as prefabricated timber framing. Hereby, a cost effective construction rate was achieved. Old foundations building walls could be re-used as main structure.
The new volume is covered with vivid mustard yellow glass in which historic monuments reflect. These monuments were renovated in an authentic way, where full use is made of the original construction. The stucco waves along the underlying masonry. Restored oak beams, braces, clatter and related timber pieces remain in sight. Nine unique apartments and two retail spaces are located in the restored buildings. The design won the ‘Heuvelink Architectuurprijs 2008’ and was also published in the distinguished architecture magazine ‘Architectuur NL’
