Atelier MEME as Architects

Plans have been set for an extension to a roadside station along a national highway in Ibaraki, to expand the increasingly cramped produce sales area significantly. The design was approached with a tight schedule that did not match the scale of the project—two months for design and four months for construction. The designer envisioned a structure similar to a circus tent, simple in configuration and assembly.

The design features a wave-like series of columns and beams extending longitudinally, creating an expansive, open space. To highlight the vibrant colors of various vegetables, the design minimizes the exposure of hardware and details. Finishing materials are applied, and ambient lighting is installed in the niches at the base of the frames. The architecture is unified in a subtle shade of grey, serving as a backdrop. As the sun sets in the west, the house's silhouette gradually emerges. It quietly and gently welcomes both passersby in vehicles and residents.
