When a Toronto family first purchased their house in the Roncesvalles Village neighbourhood, they knew it had two things going for it: the home had been meticulously well cared for by its longtime former owners – and the beautiful switchback staircase and original trim meant it had character in spades.

While the family wanted to retain its obvious charm, it was time to modernize the space functionally.

Without compromising livability and comfort, Roundabout Studio breathed new life into the century-old home by merging its classic design with a modern two-storey rear addition to create an expanded, open-plan kitchen space. Using reclaimed brick to build the lower portion, the second storey, clad in horizontal cedar slats, seems to float above it. Meanwhile, a new yet timeless front porch invites the owners, friends and neighbours to sit awhile.

Proof that moving forward can most certainly mean staying in place.
