The project for this new line of the light rail in Sassari is the expansion of the Emiciclo Garibaldi – Stazione FS – S. Maria di Pisa line, towards the city peripheral neighborhoods, Sant’Orsola, Li Punti e Baldinca. The total length is 6,915 km. The project is about the creation of 8 new stops, a viaduct and a laying up center for trains maintenance.
STOPS: even if there are different landscape features, the stops are characterized by standard elements in steel, glass and stone which strongly identify the image of the new line. Canopies’ pillars are made of 4 inclined stainless steel pipes. The steel roof is covered with a safety multi-layered glass where it is possible to install photovoltaic panels. Each stop is provided with fiberglass benches covered with cultured marble.
VIADUCT: About 600 meters of the light rail line, in a rural area, are in viaduct. The structural design chose technologies that allow to reduce the structure to the thinnest dimensions of height and encumbrance. Constructive materials and coverings propose a simple and elegant structure. The design presents a shell profile, with an inclination of 12° towards the inner tracks, to reduce exterior perception, and with metal elements presented in their technological essence. The pillars are made of two elements, with an egg-shaped section, that narrow upwards. CRM (center for trains maintenance): the centre is planned to be built in a non-urbanized area where the hill landscape is characterized by olive groves and a residential fabric of high historical value. The project tends to highlight the context’s features, integrating the building in the topography of the area. Indeed, the five pavilions of the building redraw the hill profile of the zone. Their roof is made of inclined planes differently sloping. They are covered by vegetal soil, lean on a metal plates structure where it is also possible to install photovoltaic panels. The complex topography of the roof is almost cut in longitudinal strips where the different heights allow natural light and ventilation. The facades, made of glass, are protected by aluminum brise –soleil to the south.
