Sereno: Where Time Slows Down

Sereno stands as the transformation of a former residence into a small-scale café located in Chapinero, in the heart of the Bosque Calderón Tejada neighborhood, at the foot of the eastern hills and beside the Las Delicias stream, in one of Bogotá's most historic and traditional urban spaces. The project proposes the construction of an intimate, unhurried atmosphere, capable of offering a counterpoint to the accelerated rhythm of the city.

The intervention begins with the recognition and appreciation of the pre-existing structure, seeking to make it visible through the preservation of the walls' original textures, the recovery of existing finishes, and the reactivation of spaces that retain the memory of the old house. At the same time, a materiality defined by warm, honest finishes helps consolidate a serene and welcoming atmosphere, in which the spatial experience moves away from acceleration to propose a more conscious relationship with time and dwelling. The incorporation of vegetation, planters, and trees reinforces this intention, blurring the boundaries between interior and exterior and evoking the domestic feeling of being at home.

The house that holds the Sereno café is conceived as a multisensory and synesthetic spatial experience, in which atmosphere takes on a central role in the project's narrative. Dim, indirect lighting — favoring half-light over full illumination — redefines perceptions of the space and emphasizes the emotional dimension of the architecture. Materiality and light engage in dialogue to construct almost pictorial scenes, evoking a poetics tied to the melancholy of abandoned spaces and their subsequent reactivation.
