Stadsverdichting Den Haag

In the heart of The Hague, BAU has made the design for an open space within a building block, which until now has been a forgotten place. This will be transformed into a model of urban densification and historical interweaving. With respect for the past and a vision for the future, a compact plot of 6x6 meters is being given new life. This project includes the creation of two starter homes of two storeys each, whereby the old wall from 1905 remains. The permit has now been granted.

The project honors the neighborhood's past by subtly referencing the old copper and steel mill that was once the backbone of the neighborhood. The architecture of the new homes reflects this industrial history with a contemporary twist. The green glazed bricks, a tribute to the heritage of the copper and steel mill, create a harmonious connection between past and present. This vibrant color evokes the industrial heyday while integrating seamlessly into today's urban fabric.

The old wall from 1905, which used to be a silent witness to the neighborhood's history, is now being given new life. Through smart integration, this wall becomes an iconic feature of the two starter homes. The design preserves and restores the original wall, serving as a tangible reminder of the past while blending seamlessly into the modern living environment.

This project is not only about architectural splendor, but also about sustainability and efficient use of space. Urban densification is an essential part of the drive towards a sustainable future, and these compact homes contribute to maximizing the available space within the city limits.

This urban densification in The Hague, with its subtle nod to its industrial past, demonstrates a careful balance between respect for history and innovation for the future. The green glazed bricks and black steel frames will not only adorn the facades, but also tell a story that stretches from the past to the present and beyond. This project is anchored as a beacon of harmonious coexistence of old and new, and forms a wonderful chapter in the continuous evolution of The Hague.
