Synergy Across Disciplines: The New Center for Arts and Media

Studio by 3form, an award-winning division of sustainable building materials manufacturer 3form, partnered with GSBS Architects to solve a design challenge at Salt Lake Community College (SLCC): synergy across departments. Seeking to solve the challenge of disconnected departments and disciplines, designers sought unified spaces at the new Center for Arts and Media at Salt Lake Community College South High Campus to promote collaboration and foster diverse learning experiences. The faculty at SLCC drove the idea of synergy and cross-pollination across disciplines, while GSBS architects faced a challenge with the space. The area required a visually connecting element to reaffirm their design concept while capitalizing on the natural light in the centralized atrium.

As the atrium connected audio-visual disciplines, GSBS sought a solution to allow for maximum light and address both concepts of visual pixels and audio sound waves. Studio by 3form's undulating translucent Edge fins were a perfect solution for creating a visually stunning shifting wave throughout the space. Edge can easily be customized to fit any space, which helped meet budgetary constraints as teams at Studio by 3form and GSBS worked together to maximize impact using minimal materials. The end result was a beautiful installation that helped unify the large, open space and create synergy across departments.
