Sywell Aerodrome was opened in 1928. It comprised of a Club House & aircraft hangar, with grass runways. It was enlarged during WW2 to allow for aircraft manufacture & training. During the 1960`s the Club House was converted into a Motel, with first floor accomodation added. Restoration & conversion of the Club House into The Aviator Bar & Restaurant commenced in 2001. The first floor was removed & a glazed tower with viewing deck added. Original W20 pattern steel windows were fitted along with stainless steel canopies & aluminium fascias. New Sto render was applied throughout.
The interior was completely replaced with reclaimed parquet floors, cherry panelling, new bars & 1920`s furniture & lighting. Following on from this came the new Aviator Hotel in brick & render with matching steel windows. The interior follows the art deco theme, including a custom designed rug featuring the runway plan. The blister hangar was converted into the Hangar One Conference Facility, with seating for over 500.
A new insulated steel roof was fitted, along with a hydraulic entrance door & giant winged extraction fan. The interior features state of the art light & sound rigs & hangar doors allow cars & aircraft to be easily installed. Adrian Baynes carried out all of the design work, including the corporate identity & created the winged sculpture centrepiece & memorial fountain in the garden.
