"The Cruise Apartment" unveils a masterful and thoughtful renovation by FiumeArchitecture, meticulously transforming a 104 sqm space located on the fourth floor of a stately 1920s building within Rome’s prestigious Prati district. This distinctive interior design project artfully reimagines the apartment as a sophisticated modern ship cabin, subtly drawing inspiration from the nautical world to create a unique living experience tailored for a dynamic young family of four.
The renovation expertly addressed the inherent challenge of a single-facing orientation. FiumeArchitecture’s clever strategy centered on an open-plan central living space, which now serves as the vibrant heart of the home. This intelligent design connects the private quarters while magnificently maximizing natural light and ensuring an airy, fluid circulation throughout the entire residence. The project champions "architectural archaeology" and emotional heritage, evident in its restored soul. Original patterned cementine tiles, meticulously salvaged from the larger pre-existing apartment, were thoughtfully reintegrated, acting as elegant "material carpets" that define distinct zones and preserve the authentic 1920s character of the building. Furthermore, a cherished family heirloom, Grandmother’s Chandelier, was lovingly restored and reinstalled, its intricate design inspiring contemporary wall-mounted, branch-like lighting fixtures, thereby forging a poetic continuity between antique craftsmanship and modern minimalism.
While carefully preserving the original windows and other historic features, modern interventions, such as a custom false ceiling, were seamlessly integrated to provide essential technical efficiency without compromising the overarching aesthetic. The culmination is a home that feels profoundly grounded in Roman history yet is perfectly tailored to the contemporary needs of a family with young children, embodying a harmonious blend of past and present.
