Located in the heart of the historic Prati district in Rome, this 258-square-meter apartment on Viale delle Milizie has undergone a meticulous renovation led by Architect Marzia Fiume Garelli. The project sits within a building of significant historical value, officially recognized in Rome’s Carta della Qualità.
A Storied Heritage
The building was originally designed and built in the early 1920s by Engineer Antonio Missiroli, who chose this specific apartment as his own residence. A unique architectural detail adorns the facade: a stucco stork. Legend has it that Missiroli added this symbol to celebrate the birth of his children during the building's construction, marking the property with a deeply personal family history.
The Architectural Vision
The primary objective of the renovation was to preserve the "original soul" of the engineer’s home while adapting it to contemporary living. The intervention honors the traditional "Roman-style" masonry and the historic proportions of the space, maintaining the spirit of the 1914 original license and the subsequent 1925 expansion.
Space and Light
The apartment features a highly unique floor plan. The renovation emphasizes this complexity through the strategic use of "perspective games" and visual corridors that expand the perception of space. A sophisticated, custom-designed lighting system was integrated throughout the home, highlighting the architectural transitions and creating a dialogue between the historic structure and modern design elements.
By balancing historical critical analysis with innovative spatial solutions, the project breathes new life into a piece of Roman architectural history, ensuring that Engineer Missiroli’s legacy continues to shine in the 21st century.
