In March 2022 a new lifestyle design hotel opened in 's-Hertogenbosch. The Den, a Tribute Portfolio Hotel by Marriott, has opened and with 160 rooms it is now the largest hotel in the city. According to general manager Melle van Uden, this Marriott International franchise with a stylish rooftop bar is “the tallest building in 's-Hertogenbosch where you can eat and drink with this view”.
A brand new 'lifestyle hotel' with a high level of service and one hundred and sixty rooms, two restaurants including three bars, five meeting rooms and a fitness room. “A place full of Burgundian culture and Bossche cosiness where you would like to be, and not just to sleep”, says general manager Melle van Uden. The Den, 's-Hertogenbosch is a franchise of Marriott International and part of the Odyssey Hotel Group. HDVL Designmakers was responsible for the interior design of the entire hotel including the lobby and all rooms, HIP Studio was responsible for the design of Current Rooftop Restaurant & Bar.
The inspiration
When entering the hotel, the organic shapes, flowing lines and the iconic entrance desk immediately catch your eye. Designer Vahid Kiumarsi at HDVL Designmakers: “Tribute Portfolio is a special brand of Marriott. They are signature boutique hotels with a distinct story. We never impose our own style, as often happens with the interiors of iconic architects. We always sit down with the client. We make an inventory of their wishes and then try to unfold a story through several workshops and brainstorm sessions. 's-Hertogenbosch is an old, Burgundian city where three rivers meet: the Dieze, the Aa and Dommel. They give the city center a picturesque and mysterious character. Anyone who has ever taken a cruise in this city will recognize the special experience. That's why we decided to use flowing water as a binding theme and story of this interior design concept. But with a Burgundian approach - that other specific characteristic of the city ’s-Hertogenbosch.”
The water theme
The water theme is visible in various ways, and always subtle, in the interior. For example with the wavy shape of the reception desk, which also ensures that it is not a static hotel desk, but rather stimulates the employees in their interaction with hotel guests. The lobby features streamlined seating sculptures, custom rugs that are also flowing in shape, and all the furniture is round. All these flowing lines are combined with brass details, a reference to the Palace Bridge to which the hotel is directly connected. The use of color in The Den is also inspired by water. Different shades of blue have been used in the lobby and in the carpeted floors in the corridors. This cool shade combines well with the many copper details. The hotel rooms are decorated in a dark green hue, which is nicely balanced with the black wood elements of the furniture, the metal and glass in the bathrooms. The lighting accentuates the dark green colors and creates a warm and intimate atmosphere.
Inclusiveness
One of the most important values of HDVL Designmakers is inclusiveness: “An interior should never be intimidating and exclude certain groups. It has to embrace and include people.” Helge Docters van Leeuwen explains. Hotel The Den wants to welcome both international travelers and visitors from the city, and it is therefore important that the design appeals to all groups. “The downstairs public area of the hotel is an inviting, luxurious, inclusive and airy space with lots of light materials and wallpaper, detailed furniture and lots of bamboo finishes. In the rooms, the high windows take a prominent place to connect the rich interior with the city.” Says Vahid Kiumarsi.
