THE UMBRAL HOUSE

The Umbral House is a single-family residence, completely detached and set within a lush, humid tropical environment. Its concept is based on a simple yet powerful idea: architectural access is not merely a door, but an experience. A kind of entry ritual that gains particular meaning in this place, where there are no defined urban boundaries and nature itself draws the limits.

The term umbral derives from the Latin liminaris and refers to the point of transition between the “outside” and the “inside,” the first step into a new space. It is not just a dividing line, but an intermediate territory. In this house, the threshold is not reduced to a door; it becomes an architectural gesture. An empty, open space that marks the entrance without the need for enclosures, inviting one to cross it and explore what lies beyond.

In this natural and safe environment, the door as a symbol of control becomes unnecessary. Instead, the façade itself acts as a threshold: an interstitial void that anticipates the architecture without interrupting the landscape.
