A 3 bedroom house built on the edge of a traditional East Lothian farm steading. Clad in Western red cedar, the timber framed superstructure sits on a concrete base cut into the site. Conceived as a contemporary interpretation of traditional rural artisan dwellings, the house draws openly on the legacy of modernism and of the diverse structures and objects to be found in rural East Lothian.

The house is planed upside down and provides 3 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms and ancillary storage on the ground floor. The open plan living/dining/kitchen on the first floor leads to a discreet study and small utility room. Sun and daylight are drawn deep into the plan by two rooflights. Large windows are carefully sited to take advantage of spectacular views to the Firth of Forth on the North, open countryside on the East and a wood managed by the Woodland Trust, with views beyond to the City of Edinburgh, on the West.

The compact and sunny garden is surrounded by a low natural stone wall to the access lane and full height cedar fencing to adjacent gardens. Exotic grasses have flourished in a terrain of grey beach pebbles.
