Tiziano House

arabella rocca as Architects

Casa Tiziano is an apartment of about 210 square meters in the Flaminio district of Rome. It is located on the fourth floor of a 1960s building, which due to its special design, has been listed as a building of considerable architectural interest by the local authorities.

Prior to the current renovation, the apartment was oppressive by a previous remodeling that probably occurred in the 1980s.  Many walls had been covered with dark wood paneling, which made the rooms dark and lacking in light.

Upon entering the apartment, the initial view is that of a wide corridor, which remained in its place after the remodeling.  The heavy door at the end of the corridor, separating it from the living room, has been removed and natural light, from the five living room windows, now reaches the apartment’s entrance. The opening of the corridor to the living room also provides a vista of the entire house as well as  beautiful outdoor views of the auditorium of Renzo Piano and Monti Parioli from the entrance hallway.

The kitchen, previously only accessible through a narrow service passageway, is now directly connected to the living room by a double-sized sliding glass door.

The light colors of the vertical kitchen elements are matched by the choice of the new floor parquet consisting of light oak planks in a chevron pattern. The oak flooring covers the kitchen as well as the entire living area from the entrance to the salon. The dining area, part of the living room, is directly adjacent to the kitchen and is defined by a specifically designed, round table with a graphite top and a metal base with a truncated conical shape.

Next to the table, a soft gray sofa and two, mustard-colored armchairs define a conversation corner situated adjacent to a set of large windows providing warm, natural light to the kitchen and a view of the Flaminio stadium.

A light, open bookcase of overhanging white shelves divides the living room in half: on the other side of it, we find a fireplace and television area that is separate from, yet visually connected, to the dining and conversation areas.  At one end of the large living area, the fireplace is the center of a convivial living space; it existed, prior to the renovation, but it has been completely redesigned with straight lines and modern materials.

It is now narrow and elongated, it is covered in black slate and the hood is  integrated into the wall.  The fireplace rests on a long, horizontal bench, which extends along three walls and which provides both a container space and seating throughout living area.

The two distinct parts of the sleeping area, the children’s bedrooms and the master suite, can be accessed on the left side of the corridor. On the right are the guest bathroom and service area, the latter which includes a large laundry room accessed by a door  integrated into the 6 meter long built-in closet along the corridor.

The small guest bathroom combines the warm, pastel colors of oats and green for the bathroom fixtures with the fresh tones of the oak parquet and is distinguished by wallpaper with drawings of pelicans and tropical flora.

The first door on the opposite side of the corridor leads to the children's area through a large anteroom, which was previously used as a walk-in closet and now transformed into a delightful play area.

Accessed from the anteroom, the two large, children’s bedrooms are adjacent to each other and have a connecting door.  The first bedroom, for the two smaller children, has two single beds and has a long desk suitable for games, drawings and studying. The second bedroom for the older child is outfitted with a bed and a dedicated study corner. The anteroom also provides entry to the children’s bathroom which has been specifically designed to meet the emergent needs of three girls as they grow up.

The children’s bathroom is almost entirely covered in a very smooth micro-cement, with the exception of a delightful wall with blue-green tiles in a herringbone pattern. The bathroom contains a  long sink with three separate faucets and a large shower/bathtub area. The master bedroom suite, entered from the 2nd door in the corridor,  has a spacious bedroom, a walk-in closet and a large bathroom with a double sink, double shower and a large under-window bathtub.Pink and yellow are the predominant color tones in the girls’ area. In the master suite the color palette shifts to shades of green, seen in the fabrics and especially in the wallpaper design of a lush tropical forest at the head of the bed. Green is also the color of choice in the bathroom, placed inside the shower and on the  bathtub niches.  The subtle, warm design is a result of  a combination of two, different sized rectangular tiles in various shades of green.
