In the Baltic seaside resort of Heringsdorf on the island of Usedom, a historic office building from the Wilhelminian period has been converted into a modern Tourism Service Centre (TSZ) complete with library and exhibition, and featuring a new fully glazed pavilion. Both from the outside and inside, the centre’s simple appearance blends well with the historical architecture and the neighbouring buildings in the prestigious location of Heringsdorf. The façade features a series of floor-to-ceiling pivot doors integrated into a mullion-and-transom structure. It was constructed using the VISS façade steel profile system. With its generous glazing, the pavilion represents transparency and openness. However, it is only ‘open’ in a figurative sense: this unique façade constructed from innovative lightweight steel consists of a total of eight floor-to-ceiling, double-leaf pivot doors with offset pivot hinges. The VISS façade doors met the architects’ desire for floor-to-ceiling, grid-sized opening elements that breathe life into the mullion-transom façade.
