The new UND School of Medicine and Health is designed to support the future of science research and transdisciplinary learning. What began as a space utilization study to address an anticipated 30% enrollment increase over five years became an all-inclusive education, research, and administrative facility. Building transparency reveals four levels of state-of-the-art classrooms, flexible learning environments, simulation labs, meeting and study spaces, and combined departmental office suites. Steinberg Hart’s Health Sciences Planning Team collaborated on the project with Perkins+Will in Minneapolis, and JLG Architects in North Dakota.
As design architect, Steinberg Hart completed the programming, planning, interior design, and furniture and equipment selection. Inter-professional learning communities and collaborative research spaces bring students from eight diverse SMHS programs together. The sustainably-designed building provides innovative solutions to maximizing natural light, even in the winter, while an open circulation plan encourages students and faculty to collaborate. UND is now home to the premiere health and science program in the region.
