Located at the heart of Place Bellecour in Lyon, "Urban Weaving" is a monumental temporary installation that transforms one of the city’s most emblematic public spaces into a true urban cooling oasis, a place for encounter and contemplation.

Designed by artist Romain Froquet, architect Tristan Israel, AIA Life Designers, and BioGéo Constructions, the installation pays tribute to Lyon’s textile heritage by translating the memory of the Canuts into a series of timber arches and suspended draperies. At the intersection of art, architecture, and urban ecology, the project provides an innovative response to urban heat island challenges by transforming a mineral square into an active climatic device. It combines a lightweight timber structure, technical textile canopies that filter UV radiation and promote natural ventilation, as well as a controlled misting system that enhances thermal comfort.

Conceived as a sensory promenade punctuated by shaded areas, seating, and new perspectives on the surrounding heritage, the project articulates environmental performance, quality of use, and architectural expression. Its reversible and demountable design, based on bio-based and locally sourced materials, makes it a reproducible and adaptable urban model, capable of addressing contemporary climate challenges over time.
