Design Statement
1. Project Overview
The brief was to transform the former Peter's Cone Factory in the West Village precinct (Brisbane) into an exceptional modern Thai restaurant and bar, inspired by a visionary concept rooted in the Thai word "VELA" meaning "Time." The client envisioned a monumental moon as a central feature, aiming to integrate the natural rhythm of day and night to infuse the restaurant's ambiance with vitality and dynamism.
The venue design was planned to transition from a family-friendly dining experience during the day to a vibrant cocktail bar at night emphasising craft cocktails and an enhanced overall experience.
2. Design Concept
The concept centres around the duality of "Daylight" and "Darknight," allowing for a dynamic space that captures the essence of time as represented by the moon. The design is both innovative and functional, with spatial planning that optimises workflow while creating an engaging environment.
Our goal was to depart from traditional Thai restaurant norms, resulting in the creation of VELA KINN—a vibrant, edgy, and funky post-modernist space brimming with lively energy.
3. Objectives
- Create a multifunctional space that caters to both daytime and nighttime clientele.
- Enhance operational efficiency through strategic kitchen and bar placement.
- Deliver a visually stunning environment that balances aesthetics with functionality.
4. Design Features
Key features include:
- A focal bar area designed for social interaction, strategically located to optimise flow.
- Custom storage cabinetry along the rear wall, maximising space without compromising visual appeal.
- A large, stainless steel-framed window in the kitchen, featuring fluted glass and perforated panels, enhancing the overall architectural experience.
- Integrated custom-to-design storage compartments, blending comfort with practicality.
- Playful use of materials like marble, terrazzo, and porcelain tiles creates a cohesive yet eclectic atmosphere.
5. Cohesion and Flow
The layout intentionally blurs the transition between "Daylight" and "Darknight," creating a seamless experience. The design ensures that each area flows naturally into the next, enhancing the sense of discovery as guests move through the space.

Respecting the heritage of the former Peter's Cone Factory, the design preserves the original shell while introducing modern elements. This approach reflects the historical significance of the site, connecting the past with the present in the vibrant context of West Village.
