Design Narrative & Architecture

Set within two very distinct contexts: the townscape at its rear which eventually fringes into the rural landscape beyond, the project responds accordingly. It is conceived as a means of connecting the space between the urban fabric and the natural landscape almost like bridging the gap between “the earthly” (the town) and “the ethereal” (the ridge). The project transitions from a language of solidity and masculine articulation into an architecture of layered plates recalling the eroded strata so characteristic of the Maltese landscape.

Situated on the same site that was previously occupied by an old monolithic hotel, the proposal caters for the prolongation of two neighbouring streets within the development, dividing the mass into into three blocks, two Luxury apartment blocks and a Wellness Hotel. The result is the creation of outlooks from these streets to the ridge and allowing the public to percolate within the newly created semi-public spaces.

Light shafts typically used to illuminate deep plan buildings of this type have been entirely eliminated and re-interpreted. Instead these voids have been externalised as generous open spaces between the building blocks repurposed to foster community interaction and engagement. Further eexcavations within the volumes at ground floor level provide permeability to foster community living and urban connectivity. Apartment cores and shared areas converge into centralized open spaces that function not only as circulation nodes but as vibrant social condensers. With integrated amenities such as a café, gym, pool and more, these communal spaces are seamlessly woven into daily life, fostering both connection and well-being. The result is a built environment that unites architectural form and program to support an elevated model of living.

The character and planimetric layouts of the apartments challenge expectations, not only in terms of spatial qualities and finishes, but also in terms of structural limitations where post tensioning technology has been introduced to achieve gravity defying large span cantilevered slabs. The result is a layered building - slabs which allow for the interplay between openness and privacy. It is distinguished by overhangs and terraces and setback living areas, light and shadow, as well as places of shelter and exposure. The slabs overlap in an unregulated and dynamic composition engaging in a playful choreography and become the main principles defining the project.

A carefully designed perimeter element enhances privacy by preventing overlooking between terraces whilst also contributing to the project’s experiential quality. Light, be it natural or artificial, filters through these perforations creating a sense of magic and mysticism, adding further to the architectural elegance. Fine detailing and a concerted orchestration of quality materials produce a structure that is both efficient and luxurious.

The project sets a clear tone for the future - a desirable residential development that makes a statement in terms of contemporaneity and luxury yet rooted in contextuality. The design places users’ needs at the forefront, framing them as the central protagonists of the spatial experience.

Hotel

Hotels, especially those with a particular focus on wellness, have become spaces that reinterpret and elevate the ideals of quality of life and sophistication we aspire to. With unparalleled site specificity the “Verdala Wellness Hotel” seeks to embody this richness, offering guests an elevated hospitality experience through the carefully crafted aura of its spaces defined by a warm material palette of granite, marble, plaster, carpet, and raw wood.

The solid mass is perforated to create permeability on the ground plane across a triple void pyramidal reception area stretching from one end of the building to the other – dissolving boundaries and enhancing public connectivity - from the public street across to the more private hotel gardens on the other side of the building offering uninterrupted panoramic views across the valley and beyond. This same internal hollow subdivides the building programmatically and is linked by bridges at the respective levels.

Erosions within the green plateau create intimate spaces, primarily at the lower level housing the spa, while the landscape is designed to extend upward, integrating seamlessly with this same level. The hotel celebrates the dialogue between the ridge, the landscape, and the street, a spa area which incorporates a pool which is at once indoors and indoors – spaces flowing from outdoors to indoors merely separated by a glass sheet.

As a respectful gesture toward the rear residential block to the East — and with the aim of improving views and enhancing outlook both from the residential apartments and from within the hotel — the building mass on that side is shaved and re-oriented away from the residential block. Ultimately, the building is gently sculpted to follow the contours of the landscape, striving toward a timeless expression of architecture.

The Verdala Wellness Hotel transcends mere accommodation, becoming a sculpted experience where architecture, landscape, and atmosphere converge. Every form, void, and material has been carefully considered to engage the senses, foster well-being, and create moments of discovery. From the dialogue with its surrounding context to the intimate spaces within, the hotel embodies a harmonious balance between sophistication and serenity, offering guests not just a stay but an immersive journey that evokes emotions lingering in memory.
