Weave

Tjep as Architects

Hoogstad Architects developped a concept to create high-rise buildings based on the same principals applied in the construction of offshore platforms, these are made by employing robot-driven production techniques.

We were asked by Droog Design along side with Jurgen Bey and Allias to create concepts for the visual identity of these buildings. Besides the possibility of placing buildings on water, especially in places where there is a shortage of building land (for example in Hong Kong), for us, the most interesting aspect of the challenge is the idea is that these buildings can change appearance in a relatively short time laps by replacing or adapting the skin of the building.

Our 'weave' concept is based on structures of overlapping layers, consisting of strokes each supporting a different function or appearance. Aspects like: advertising, greenery, light & air penetration, color, etc...

The visual manifestation of the building dependends on the activities deployed behind the skin.

The result is a patchwork of structures that creates a unique 'dress' for each building. This new architectural typology may have far going implications: In the future sky-skrapers may well not be simply build anymore but also dressed up!
