The Wonder Box refers to both the project, a new 90 sqm HDB flat in Sengkang West Avenue, as well as the defining structure within the flat. Wonder Box reinvents the space typology for a modestly-sized home, achieving openness, versatility and organised storage, with a striking design aesthetic. 

Singapore‘s HDB flats are usually presented with common stereotypical design options. However, Wonder Box is proof that the right design concept can create a better fit for daily life with high-level aesthetics as well.

Built to conceal a bomb shelter, two bathrooms, wardrobes, TV cabinet, air-conditioner ledge and provide storage areas, the Wonder Box is ultimately rooted in functionality, but it also makes a strong visual statement from all angles. The glossy black laminated box-like structure uses the narrow layout of the HDB flat without overwhelming its space. By extending its length vertically, the visual weight of the box is greatly reduced, giving it aesthetic balance within its surroundings. Its design also allows the homeowners to do away with door handles, which enhances the sleek look of the space. Sitting in the centre of the flat, the Wonder Box looks even more striking at night. I like the idea of a box that keeps everything out of sight, leaving open uncluttered spaces which also gives the homeowners a clear mind.

Together with its success of combining form and function on a modest budget, the design concept of Wonder Box brings with it an emotional element too. That is the wonder and delight for its homeowners and guests in experiencing a completely new style of living.

I completed the project in 2009 and in 2012, it won the President*s Design Award Singapore.
