Woodlark Hotel

OFFICEUNTITLED as Architect and Interior Designer

Designed to reflect the nuance, soul, and beauty of Portland, Woodlark redefines hospitality in the Pacific Northwest. Built in 1912 as one of Portland’s earliest commercial skyscrapers, the Woodlark Building served as Portland’s first pharmacy.

The adjacent building and hotel’s east wing, The Cornelius Hotel, was built in 1908. OFFICEUNTITLED retrofitted the two adjacent buildings, the original wood frame windows were removed, restored, and reinstalled with new insulated glazing units, the exterior brick was cleaned and repointed, and the damaged metal mansard roofs and intricate ornamental metal detailing had to be substantially reconstructed. The majority of the interior walls of the building were demolished to insert a new structural frame while new stairs on each floor connect them. Utilizing the original 20ft ceiling heights on the third floor, unique mezzanine rooms featuring sculptural spiral stairs were created.

The interiors represent the “New Northwest” as expressed through subtle, soft, and elegant detailing. Using an eclectic mix of luxe textiles, raw wood, blue leather, plant life, black lacquer and brass, the guest room’s materials and treatments mimic Portland’s surroundings in an elevated way. Custom pieces give the hotel rooms a residential feel - from marble-topped amenity tables to bathroom sconces, to the luxe gold finishes throughout the space. Float dipped walls with blue baseboards, two-toned blue velvet chairs, and custom Christiane Millinger handmade wool rugs create a layered yet simplistic richness. Lively and bright, the hotel’s interiors take cues from nature exemplified by the custom-designed wallpaper inspired by native plants. In order to reinforce the two distinct buildings while simultaneously creating one cohesive space, the wallpaper inverts from green and white, to green and blue depending on the room location.

Design Director Brooks Atwood of OFFICEUNTITLED aimed to create an entirely new palette by mixing finishes to create a re-envisioned idea of luxury by combining textured leather, aged brass, blackened steel, velvets, and a raw wood floor, creating an elegant balance of comfort, style, and luxury. The ambiance is comfortable luxury with attention to detail. It’s an unforgettable feeling that is both contemporary and vintage simultaneously.

Woodlark is a true design destination for travelers worldwide, while also hosting a perfect collection of amenities. Food and beverage facilities include; Good Coffee Shop, Bullard Restaurant, and Abigail Hall Bar, along with a signature Well+Fit program allowing travelers to stream online workouts, access to in-studio class passes and state-of-the-art equipment.
