This project is an extension of the Japanese restaurant Golden Omakase in Shanghai, designed by atelier TUO. When Studio 163 were approached to transform this ground floor one bedroom flat in Kentish Town into a bright and modern two bedroom flat, it was a very dark and damp space which lacked flow and visual connection. Stepped Wall House is a direct response to the unique site topography and geometry. The typical London ‘side extension’ typology had been adapted to the sloping and narrowing side passage site. The architectural solution was a mono pitched side roof which lands on a sequence of stepped walls which vary in height. In plan the steps create zones for dining, sitting and working. For our clients in Lebbeke, we set to work on their existing home. The layout of the house needed to be rethought to improve its circulation. With 2 teenagers growing up, there was also the need for more space and a new, practical bathroom. Ypsilon Business Photography The main intervention became the demolition of the existing volume at the back of the house. Instead, a new volume was added, including a new rooftop dormer. Tasked with designing and project managing the complete refurbishment and extension of a 5-bedroom family home, the stand-out element of the project was the visually-striking open plan kitchen-dining and entertainment space at the rear of the property. The focus was on blending the relationship between the garden and the interior, to reflect the homeowner’s outdoor lifestyle. The masseria is small in size compared to many others in Salento, even though in this area called “del Capo" they are generally smaller than those in the Brindisi area. The main volume was intact toward the east, while on the opposite side it was completely collapsed. The ancient volume was reconstructed with old recovered tuffs and each room was rebuilt by a local master (Mesciu Toto) with star-vaulted and barrel-vaulted ceilings.
