Turkish flavour, Amsterdam steakhouse

BeyMen Steakhouse & Cafe Amsterdam sits on Plein '40-'45 in Slotermeer, in the west of the city. The brief was to bring the flavour culture of Turkish cuisine together with the format of a contemporary steakhouse, in a venue that feels at home in Amsterdam's cosmopolitan everyday life.

Wood, brick, metal and light

Natural wood, exposed brick and black steel form the base palette. Above it, the lighting does much of the work: rows of bare bulbs, suspended frames and glowing lettering give the interior a warm, lively ceiling and divide the long plan into recognisable zones. Industrial details and graphic signage carry the brand's energetic identity into the space without letting it overpower the architecture.

Open shelves and greenery

A grid of open timber and steel shelving with planting runs along the walls and around the stair. It softens the industrial shell and brings a more intimate scale to a large room, while the material choices stay consistent with the brand's other venues and respond to the character of the neighbourhood.

A place for lunch and for the evening

The steakhouse is planned as a social meeting place rather than only a dining room: calmer at lunch, busier in the evening, suited to business lunches and long dinners alike. Long communal tables, banquettes and smaller tables are mixed across the plan, so that groups of every size find their place among the 280 seats.

Designed and built in parallel

The project was delivered as a partial turnkey commission, and the 40-day design process ran in parallel with the 130-day construction period. BeyMen Steakhouse & Cafe Amsterdam is part of the studio's long-standing work for the BeyMen restaurant chain in the Netherlands and Germany, which began with the Rotterdam branch in 2016 and continued with Amsterdam Osdorp and Dortmund.

Area: 832 m² (722 m² indoor, 110 m² outdoor)
Capacity: 280 seats
Completed: 2017
