Amai Artisanal Bakehouse is a contemporary café and bakery located in Kolhapur, India. Designed by Gauche Studio, the project transforms an existing Kerala-inspired building into a warm and inviting hospitality space through a restrained architectural intervention that respects the character of the original structure.
Rather than altering the building extensively, the design builds upon its existing architectural language. The pitched roof, generous volumes and natural light establish the foundation for a contemporary interior that feels both familiar and refined. New insertions are intentionally minimal, allowing the original architecture to remain the defining element of the experience.
The planning centres around a compact service counter positioned to create clear customer circulation while maintaining visual openness across the café. Large glazed openings strengthen the connection between the interior and the surrounding landscape, allowing daylight to become an integral part of the spatial experience.
A restrained material palette of textured plaster, timber, natural stone, brushed metal and warm lighting reinforces the calm atmosphere of the space. Carefully integrated display shelving, custom furniture and subtle lighting contribute to a hospitality environment where architecture, materials and function work together seamlessly.
Instead of creating contrast with the existing structure, the project demonstrates how adaptive reuse can produce a contemporary identity through careful preservation, thoughtful detailing and contextual design.
