Arriving in Delft is an unforgettable experience. From the outset, Mecanoo’s idea was to design a station that makes it clear to visitors that they have arrived in Delft. The station, in combination with the new city hall, sits atop a new train tunnel built in place of the old concrete viaduct that divided the city in two since 1965.Coming up the escalators, the impressive ceiling with the historic map of Delft unfolds (in collaboration with Geerdes Ontwerpen). Palazzo’s Centenary Square, the largest public square in the heart of Birmingham, currently lacks cohesion or a clear identity or atmosphere. Mecanoo’s design transforms the square into one with three distinct realms: monumental, cultural and entertainment. These palazzos form an urban narrative of important periods in the history of the city; The Repertory Theatre (REP), a 1960s concrete building, the Library of Birmingham, designed in 2009 and Baskerville House, a listed sandstone building designed in 1936. On the invitation of Sberbank, (designed by) Erick van Egeraat took part in the design competition for the newly established Sberbank Corporate University, close to the Novorizhkaya highway, west of Moscow. The site is located in a suburban, almost rural setting, bordered by woods on its southern side, and the Istra river embankment on the northern side. The 30,000-m2 Sberbank Corporate University will consist of education and conference spaces, dormitories, guest teacher quarters, teacher housing, a club building and sports facilities. Investment divided into three phases, including (1) construction of the new Regional Blood Center building, (2) shelter for the mobile blood center [bus] and (3) the first in Poland specialized Center for Blood Cancer Diagnostics to be located within the existing building. In 2012, Poland and Ukraine will be hosting the UEFA European Football Championship. For the occasion, a new national stadium will be built in Warsaw on the existing but crumbling rubble-built Dziesieciolecia Stadium abandoned for sports uses in 1988. The stadium is in Skaryszewski Park east of the city center on the bank of the Vistula, and will form the heart of a new sports park. The construction of the stadium is divided systematically into two. The stand consists of prefabricated concrete parts. Above this is a steel wire net roof with a textile membrane hung on freestanding steel supports with inclined tie rods. As part of the comprehensive renovation project for the Glòries shopping centre and following the opening of the “El Passatge” outdoor leisure and dining area, work is now going ahead on a new 3,200 m2 space which will provide a variety of gastronomic activities and opportunities to sample gourmet cuisine. The new space “El Mercat de Glòries” consists of a large restaurant with various culinary “corners” bringing together nineteen different companies, and a cookery workshop. This unusual high-rise will stand against the windowless facade of its even higher, 120-metre neighbour. The neighbour’s name is Łucka City – the biggest and perhaps the least appreciated apartment building in Warsaw. The new house shall resemble an oversized cabinet, finished with wood panelling on the sides, glazed with an undulating curtain wall shielding the apartments from the sunlight and the traffic noise. The second version of the investment, redesigned into an office tower, features a concrete exo skeleton that serves a double function of structural support and heating prevention. More

‘Open and connected’ The new building for the Faculty of Science of the University of Amsterdam, the first phase of which was delivered at the beginning of this year, is the product of a unique collaboration between three architecture bureaus. De Rotterdam is conceived as a vertical city: three interconnected mixed-use towers accommodating offices, apartments, a hotel, conference facilities, shops, restaurants, and cafes. The project began in 1997. Construction started at the end of 2009, with completion in 2013. The towers are part of the ongoing redevelopment of the old harbour district of Wilhelminapier, next to the Erasmus Bridge, and aim to reinstate the vibrant urban activity – trade, transport, leisure – once familiar to the neighbourhood. Brandimage and Noé Duchaufour- Lawrance have designed the new Air France business lounge at Paris-Charles de Gaulle airport. This lounge has been conceived as a harmonious pathway, consisting of sections which are conducive to walking acting as a prelude to the journey ahead. The architectural concept was inspired by a park and developed around a contemporary reinterpretation of the plant expression. Shapes, materials and colours conjure up nature and the organic world. Sports and recreation centre Nekkerpool (serving the province of Antwerp in Belgium) offers a range of indoor and outdoor activities, and the addition of a swimming pool to the programme will make the package even more complete. The architects challenge was to seize the opportunity to give the Nekker recreation centre as a whole a facelift, in addition to designing a modern and sustainable swimming pool.
