Neri&Hu’s Papi Restaurant reveals layers of Paris’ history

18 Nov 2020  •  News  •  By Allie Shiell

In Paris’ 9th arrondissement, the new Papi Restaurant by Neri&Hu takes a layered approach to an existing 19th century Haussmann building. By carefully stripping back layers of finishes that have built up over decades, the architects reveal the raw beauty of materials beneath. Imperfections are celebrated rather than concealed.

Portions of old limestone and bricks walls, a steel column and a brick column are preserved and integrated into the design. A steel I-beam on the exterior is featured, while a portion of old stone moulding is left exposed. Old materials are juxtaposed against fresh new tiles, glass and wood.

A raw-steel-famed fully-operable glass facade provides visual continuity between the street and the restaurant interior. Guests entering the space immediately are presented with a juxtaposition of old and new materials. This juxtaposition is emphasized by mirrors that help to create an expanded feeling of space within the 52 square meter area.

Inside the space, an oblong volume forms an arena-like enclosure that integrates seating, display, chef’s preparation counter, privacy screen and a wood-burning oven. Finished with handmade convex-curved white ceramic tiles, the enclosure’s large openings trimmed with thick birch plywood that serves as seating.

A central communal table features a long custom pendant light above, while a modern series of lights by Viabizzuno create a stark contrast against the old limestone wall.
