L-shaped Wall – STEELAB SML:
Design and Functional Planters for Large-Scale Greening
Inspired by traditional precast concrete walls, the STEELAB SML L-shaped wall system uses modular assembly to create fully customized layouts. Sheet metal brings both aesthetics and functionality to this innovative concept.
From an architectural standpoint, the façade panels provide a clean, contemporary look. A wide range of finishes is available: powder-coated aluminium in any RAL shade, weathering steel (Corten®), or polished stainless steel for a refined appearance.
Designed for large bottomless planters, the SML system combines straight and corner modules to easily define and structure planting zones.
Description
Each module features folded and double-folded upper edges. Modules are joined with hidden splice plates, ensuring perfect alignment while preventing galvanic corrosion. Vertical ribs and additional reinforcements guarantee strength, even on long spans.
Lightweight and modular, the entire structure is easy to handle and transport to site.
Materials
Aluminium, 3–6 mm thick depending on dimensions: strong, durable, and lightweight.
Alternative options: Corten® steel or stainless steel.
Finishes and colors
Façades are coated on all visible surfaces and returns. Two finishing systems are available:
Liquid paint: epoxy primer + polyurethane finish and varnish.
Powder coating: epoxy primer + polyester finish.
Installation
SML walls must be installed on a stable, level surface with a drainage layer to prevent water accumulation. Splice joints allow for thermal expansion while enabling independent module removal for maintenance.
For soil retention, two configurations are possible:
Self-supporting: requires a footing equal to the soil height retained.
Anchored: reduced footing combined with braces or tie-rods linking opposite modules.
