On the edge of Dongen, the expansion and renovation of a funeral home was recently completed. What was once a modest farewell house has now been transformed into a light, serene, and welcoming environment, while respectfully preserving its understated character. This transformation reflects a deep understanding of the emotional importance of such a place, where people come to say goodbye and find comfort.

Through the introduction of new facade openings and a subtle slat structure, the building now radiates openness and transparency. The thoughtful placement of these elements ensures that the interior receives generous natural light, creating a calm and uplifting atmosphere, while maintaining the privacy essential to moments of mourning and reflection. This balance between openness and intimacy is at the heart of the design.

The wooden cladding of the façade plays a significant role in the transformation. Its natural texture and warm tones give the building a soft, almost embracing appearance. The material choice reinforces the emotional ambiance of the farewell home, contributing to a sense of calm and dignity.

The building's program has been expanded to include three intimate mourning rooms, each designed to offer a peaceful space for personal goodbyes. A spacious, light-filled central gathering area now forms the heart of the building — a place where loved ones can come together to support each other and share memories. In addition, various support spaces have been added, offering practical and emotional comfort during times of loss.

The result is a carefully considered and sensitively executed design — a place where architecture gently supports the rituals of farewell and remembrance, and where warmth, respect, and serenity are tangible in every detail.
