Apartment S

I received the request at the beginning of 2018 from the client who for a long time had plans to carry out a total renovation but did not feel comfortable handling such a large project by themselves in combination with toddlers and work.

On our first visit to the apartment, we were immediately struck by the beautiful building and many fine original details preserved. However, the use of the apartment was not adapted to the clients needs. For example, the kitchen, perhaps the most important room for most people, was located in a corridor without windows even though the apartment is over 200 square meters. There was also a need for more bathrooms as well as a total renovation to restore and enhance the original character of the space.

The client was open to major changes and suggestions while also being very keen on getting started quickly and with an effective schedule. We couldn't resist the challenge and the project started at full speed a few weeks after the first meeting. All furniture, except for a couple of paintings and a mirror, was sold and while we were drawing on floor plans and fixed interiors, moodboards were also made for the new furniture an style. The search for interesting items at auctions has been ongoing throughout the project.

It has been a process; I think half of all the furniture we have proposed has been rejected at least once, but now they have found their place as beloved objects and natural parts of the home. And the client is super satisfied with the result. To completely reshape the furnishing is a big process, and what is aesthetically pleasing to an individual is largely learned and based on past experience. The first time you see an amazingly designed piece of furniture it can be difficult to appreciate it. It's not always love at first sight, but many design objects grow on you. Therefore, it is always important to show furniture in a context. Preferably through reference images where you get a sense of how the objects contribute to a whole.

Since there we found very nice original details, we picked up colors and materials that were already in the building. One example of this is the green marble that recurs in the custom-designed floors in the hallway and bathrooms, in niches, in front of the fireplace etc.
