Arbe 49: a building with a contemporary image and a sustainable ‘heart’

Ragno as Manufacturers

A sustainable urban regeneration project with high energy efficiency standards and Leed Core & Shell certification, designed by the Galliano & Tagliapietra architecture firm, which chose Ragno Ceramiche porcelain stoneware slabs for the outdoor raised paving and the ventilated walls.

Milanese architecture firm Galliano & Tagliapietra has curated the renovation of the Arbe 49 building in an area to the north of Milan undergoing continuous change that has transformed the city’s skyline, near Piazza Gae Aulenti and the Isola neighbourhood.

It is a sustainable project with high efficiency standards and exceptional design values, that offers a contemporary reinterpretation of the architectural style of its surroundings. The building is a composition of severe, simple geometrical forms, with an attractive balance between solid and hollow sections.

“Interiors of outstanding quality in terms of energy saving as well as design and finishes. Wellbeing was a major consideration for this building, intended to accommodate dynamic businesses and young professionals and enable them to grow in a space tailored to their needs,” the architects explain.

The five-floor building was designed with interior spaces that place comfort at the heart of the architectural approach. As well as the interior layout, the technological systems installed on the individual floors were completely redesigned to deliver improved efficiency standards.

The various spaces are set within a regular, flexible floor plan to cover the varying requirements for use: open spaces, offices, meeting rooms, not to mention exclusive areas with direct access to the terraces for a magnificent view over the city of Milan.

The architects decided to finish the 4th and 5th floor terraces with the raised paving system, using the Realstone_Jerusalem XT20 stone-effect porcelain stoneware collection in Noce color in 50×100 cm size.

The outdoor raised paving system is a very versatile construction method that can be installed above any type of paving; it consists of a stoneware surface mounted on a convenient, lightweight supporting structure. Each individual module can be easily removed at any time, simplifying the inspection, modification and maintenance of utility systems.

Ragno played a crucial role in this project, including the use of stone-effect porcelain stoneware slabs to clad the external facade with a ventilated wall system, which replaced the entire perimeter envelope to upgrade the building’s energy efficiency and sound insulation.

The use of Ragno porcelain stoneware for the facade cladding boosts the building’s energy efficiency and soundproofing, as well as resolving issues of damp and atmospheric aggression, while guaranteeing outstanding comfort in the interior.

This sustainability-oriented design approach has won Arbe 49 Leed Core & Shell certification.
