Studio Carver was commissioned to remodel a poorly constructed two storey addition to an end of terrace property in Brixton for a young family. A single storey glazed extension connecting to the side and rear garden would create a flexible space for modern living.
As part of the contemporary reconfiguration, minimally framed slim sliding glass doors were installed to provide much needed natural light and easy access to the garden in this Brixton House extension.
This mid-century property previously offered a dimly lit uninviting entrance with very little cloakroom space. The new configuration boasts an oversized structural rooflight with staggered buttresses offering an instant wow-factor as you enter the London property.
The structural glass rooflight is the ‘pièce de résistance’ within this Brixton House extension boasting a width of over 1.5m and length in excess of 3m. The oversized rooflight soaks the entire reception space which offers plenty of storage and a large timber dressing bench. This transformation is just one of the clever design elements by the architect.
The slim sliding glass doors boast ultra-slim sightlines of just 21mm of aluminium framed profile. The flush threshold detail offers barrier free access between the indoors and outdoors; perfect for its younger occupants!
To the side of the single storey extension, an extra wide slim frameless glass window runs across the centre adjacent to the kitchen sink and cupboards creating a focal point as well as increasing the available daylight and ventilation to the space.
Tall internal glass doors helped define different zones within the Brixton House extension without impeding on the natural light entering the space.
The upper floors were reconfigured and include a new dormer with a large frameless glass window, a feature staircase with natural light flooding through a large frameless glass window. The glazing was a key element in this project.
The Brixton House single storey extension lends itself to outdoor living. The light-filled and inviting new layout contributes towards the calmness that this well-designed reconfigured space evokes.
A combination of functional design with open plan and seamless transitions to the the garden make this a highly desirable contemporary family home.
