A Victorian Side Return Extension Enhanced by Slim Pivot Doors
Located within a traditional Victorian terrace in South London, Ravensdon Street demonstrates how contemporary glazing solutions can transform existing homes through light, openness and a stronger connection to outdoor space. The project centred on the creation of a side return extension that reconfigured the property's layout, creating a larger kitchen and dining area while establishing a direct relationship between the interior and garden.
A pair of bespoke aluminium pivot doors supplied by IQ Glass became the defining architectural feature of the extension, providing expansive views, generous access to the garden and a refined contemporary aesthetic that complements both the existing Victorian architecture and the modern intervention.
Opening Up a Victorian Home
Like many Victorian terrace properties, the original home suffered from a constrained rear layout with limited natural light reaching the central living spaces. The side return extension was designed to unlock additional floor area and create a more open, functional environment for modern family life.
A key objective of the project was to establish a stronger visual and physical connection between the home's internal and external spaces. The extension achieves this through extensive glazing and minimal framing, allowing daylight to penetrate deep into the interior while creating uninterrupted views of the landscaped garden.
The architectural approach carefully balances contemporary design with respect for the existing building. Matching brickwork was selected for the extension, ensuring that the new addition sits comfortably alongside the original Victorian structure.
Minimal Framed Pivot Doors
Central to the design are two large bespoke aluminium pivot doors. Unlike conventional hinged or sliding systems, the pivot doors offer a striking architectural presence while maintaining exceptionally slim sightlines.
Designed with the same minimal 21mm sightline aesthetic associated with minimal windows® systems, the doors function almost as full-height glazed walls when closed. Their large-format glass panels maximise transparency and allow natural light to flood the kitchen and dining areas throughout the day.
When opened, the pivot doors create a generous opening between the interior and exterior spaces, helping to blur the boundary between house and garden. This seamless transition is reinforced by the use of continuous flooring finishes internally and externally, further strengthening the sense of connection between the two environments.
Enhancing Indoor-Outdoor Living
The project demonstrates how carefully specified glazing can fundamentally alter the way a home is experienced. By providing wide openings, minimal sightlines and level access to the garden, the pivot door systems encourage the indoor and outdoor spaces to function as a single connected environment.
Natural light, views and movement between spaces were key considerations throughout the design, resulting in an extension that feels both spacious and welcoming while maintaining a strong connection to the surrounding landscape.
