Nestled in the bustling center of Berlin, the C59 project by HAA&D transforms a 180m² duplex into a peaceful refuge, balancing the vibrancy of the city with a soft, tranquil atmosphere. Despite being part of a newly constructed complex, the apartment feels like a private retreat, seamlessly blending with the surrounding natural environment.
At the heart of the design is the thoughtful layout, which creates a strong axis that runs from the entrance wall, aligning three key gathering points: the kitchen island, the dining table, and the sofa. These "islands" foster a circular flow that invites movement around them while maintaining easy communication and eye contact between family and guests. The sofa, though positioned as a freestanding element, turns in multiple directions, drawing the space together. It faces the TV on one side and another seating corner on the opposite, while its flanking sides offer views to the garden and the kitchen, naturally bridging the various functions of the space and uniting the interior.
The extensive use of glazing enhances the connection between the indoors and outdoors, with the apartment seeming to merge with the surrounding garden. Wavy curtains in soft, natural colors filter the sunlight, creating a warm and peaceful ambiance, while the minimal decor emphasizes openness and clarity. HAA&D’s design approach shines through in the choice of materials, particularly the recurring use of wood.
Known for its timeless elegance, sustainability, and positive psychological effects, wood is used extensively in the apartment’s custom carpentry and flooring. The handcrafted wooden elements, designed by the architects and made by local artisans, meet the specific needs of the residents, offering both functionality and a sense of warmth.
Art also plays a key role in personalizing the space. Bold paintings by a local artist punctuate the minimalist interior, adding splashes of color that contrast with the natural, neutral palette.
On the ground floor, the semi-public areas encourage gathering and connection, while the upper floor houses the private spaces, ensuring moments of intimacy when needed. The open-plan layout and strategic design of the central axis allow for easy flow and accessibility, making the apartment feel both expansive and intimate at once.
In C59, HAA&D has created a harmonious balance between simplicity, functionality, and aesthetic beauty. The home is a peaceful escape from the fast pace of city life, celebrating the delicate interaction between architecture, nature, and the human experience.
