The external bricks I used were AUSTRAL bricks from the Industrial range in a mid gray “IRON” colour principally to match the existing rendered brick house which is painted off gray, and to keep the new work light and clean and to set it off against the varied residential backdrop.
In contrast, the upper floor is clad in a Weathertex Weathergroove smooth 150 mm lined board painted a lighter shade of gray to contrast the brickwork below.
EXTENSION & RENOVATION
The owner of this house is the second generation of their family to engage ITN Architects to design a new house for them, having designed and completed a new house for the clients parents around 20 years ago. Thus having spent most of their life in an ITN Architects designed house, they were prepared to undergo this process and experience again, albeit many years later.
This project is a renovation and extension to an Edwardian timber house, originally built around 1900 in an inner suburb of Melbourne, Australia. The new building at the rear of the house is in part one and two stories and forms a large open plan kitchen, living and dining area with glass doors across the rear of the extension. Upstairs is a master bedroom wing of the house with views over the rooftops to other nearby buildings of interest. A slatted timber storage cage stair links the two floors, with remnant brick fireplaces retained throughout the renovated house, most of which are still in working order.
The predominant materials used on the externally and on the interiors are largely subdued and done in a simple natural white and gray palette and are complimented by natural finish concrete floors, timber stair and feature wall and timber kitchen cupboards and shelves, white granite benchtops and gray bricks which continue internally on the fireplace reflecting the outside within.
The external skillion roof form dominates the internal space and reflect the varied mix of residential buildings in the adjacent area. A suspended timber pendant light fitting and another set of glass pendants also highlight the living areas. The old front part of the house has also been renovated and upgraded throughout including new bathrooms and side windows.
