Cave houses, Kea - Greece

The cave houses in Kea island, develop on a picturesque hill, overlooking the bay of Vourkari. The architectural design of the kea island villas, integrates the structures in the unique natural environment. Built into the slopes, these cave houses follow the contours of the natural terrain. Their volumes, develop in the ground, seamlessly blending in the characteristic Cycladic landscape. This integration ends up in continuous, arched facades that open to the Aegean Sea, offering unobstructed, breathtaking views. This architectural design results in structures that almost disappear in the slope, leaving the landscape almost untouched.

The decision to design cave houses was driven by the need for innovative design, but also sustainability. The buildings integrate harmoniously in the scenic location, respecting the surrounding landscape. Moreover, as cave houses, these structures, are also energy efficient. Each villa develops in a linear layout, while the bedrooms and living rooms face the Aegean sea. The auxiliary uses of each cave house, have natural light and air, thanks to sunken courtyards that also function as small terraces, protected by the wind.

In addition, natural building materials such as stone and contemporary building techniques, result in modern cave houses that respect the local architecture. In front of each villa, a private terrace with a swimming pool develops along the facade, offering a serene experience to the dwellers. The visual connection of the living room and the bedrooms to each swimming pool, is direct. Thus, the natural element of the water is a prominent throughout the whole residential complex.

The landscape of the island was the inspiration of the landscape design of the project. Mediterranean flora covers the communal spaces and the green roofs as well, increasing energy efficiency. Finally, the materials and color scheme selected for the cave houses, enhance this atmosphere of tranquility and respectful integration to the surrounding environment.
