The Compass Bamboo Pavilion is located at the  entrance of the Compass Village, Lin'an District,  Hangzhou, China, serving as a landmark for the  village. The pavilion provides a leisure space for  villagers and tourists. The design adopts a bottom-  up concept. Sixteen bamboo segments are inter-  crossed to form a sector, and then sixty sectors are  connected circularly to create an umbrella shape.  The sectors incline outwards due to gravity, and they  mutually achieve the balance. The pavilion is five  metres high and ten metres in diameter. Under it,  there is a semicircle of bamboo chair designed with  the same constructional logic for people enjoying the  mountain view. The Compass Bamboo Pavilion is an  experiment of tectonics and engineering of traditional  material.
